Welcome to the Storm Movie Blog!

Hello everyone! Welcome to the production blog for the Storm movie. A brief introduction: I’m Tracy King, the movie’s Producer. I’ll be posting various things here from the news, marketing, PR and ‘general interest’ side of the project, and the vastly more  exciting ‘art and animation’ side of things will be posted by Dan ‘DC’ Turner and Fraser Davidson. They’ll be uploading character designs, timelapsed videos of artwork being created, concept sketches, inspiration and source material, video clips from the movie, and sometimes just ’stuff they like’, all posted first (and mostly exclusively) to this blog, and maybe even the occasional post from Tim himself.

What is the Storm Movie?

I’m guessing most of you are already aware of Tim Minchin’s 9-minute beat poem, Storm. In case you haven’t heard it or want to again, here’s the audio on YouTube. In late 2008 I approached Tim with the proposal for making Storm into an animated movie after seeing him perform it live at Nine Lessons and Carols in London and being what we Brits like to call ‘gobsmacked’. Tim had already envisaged the poem as an animation, thankfully, so it was a pretty short conversation which ended with “yes”.  I think beer might have been involved, but despite that, just six months later we were premièring a 45-second teaser trailer at TAM London thanks to the immense talents and hard work of DC and Fraser. You can read more about them on the ‘about‘ page, please do visit their personal web pages too.

The Storm Movie will be a mix of character animation and kinetic typography. The teaser trailer will be posted on this blog soon so keep an eye out via the RSS feed, the official Twitter feed @storm_movie or Facebook. We’re also still working on building this blog but wanted to get it launched, so expect a few improvements, tweaks and bug fixes as we go along. You’re always welcome to give technical feedback via the comments.

I think Storm is one of the greatest poems, nay, one of the greatest things, ever written, and that’s why I’m so sure that the finished animation will be incredible. The challenge of bringing visuals to something already so perfect is a huge one, but with source material that good, we have the best possible motivation to succeed. I hope you’re as excited as I am about the forthcoming movie, and in the meantime please enjoy this blog.

Excellent news! I am certain that Tim stole my own thoughts for Storm, and then put them all down in a much clearer & concise form, than I could ever dream of. Clever bugger…

Looking forward to viewing your work.

@Guy, that was exactly my thought when I first saw it. “But…that’s what *I* think about stuff!”. Very excited that there are animators and artists who also think that way about stuff. Although the audio has already had a huge audience, the animation will hopefully help it reach and even wider and more diverse audience.

Will this be a full length movie, or just a short film? Either way, it looks great.

@William Brinkman – the poem is 9 minutes long, so the animation will be 9 minutes long. Just the right length for YouTube :)

I wish not concur on it. I assume warm-hearted post. Expressly the appellation attracted me to read the sound story.

Firstly, many thanks to all of you for the lovely comments posted across the internet, not to mention those who have posted and featured us and the trailer on your own blogs. It makes all the long cold hours spent in the office over the last few months worth the hassle! dog shampoo
